Central Maine Harley-Davidson® history is great with time-honored memories of motorcycling past and present. Wendell Sproul and his family first established Central Maine Harley-Davidson®, in 1988. Wendell was seeking to provide a better life for himself and his 3 children. So he put up his welding hat and headed to Hermon, Maine. Back then and at first glance, you would think Central Maine Harley-Davidson® was just an old hay barn, built from the hardest lumber with its post and beam structure. And for the most part, you would have been right. You see the building standing today as Central Maine Harley-Davidson®, has been around since the late 1800's and was once named Maine Motorcycle Sales. Established back in 1960 by Adrian Jones and his wife. The building crossed as a hay barn for cows as well as Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. There were select few that purchased a new 1964 FLH Duo-Glide for $1500 back then. It wasn't really the money that prevented them, from what we hear Mr. Jones was quite selective. These were the days when Peter Fonda rode the all American chopper in the movie Easy Rider, and the Shovel Head motor was introduced replacing the famous Pan Head. If these walls could only talk...imagine the stories they would tell.
The stories might sound a little muffled now though. Wendell and the family got straight to business, giving the walls and exterior a new look while retaining the building's heritage. The second floor that was used to store hay, old shovel head and scorpion snowmobile parts, a couple of sprint motorcycles, and an I-beam for hoisting American up and down. Sales offices were added, a window was installed for displaying new models, and a splash of lighting overhead still lights the newest product. But the most unique of all, the post and beam craftsmanship still remains exposed. If you haven't seen it, then it's worth a look.
It has been an incredible journey thus far. And Central Maine Harley-Davidson® has built its reputation as a fair and honest place to do business.
